세계 최대 규모 사진 아트페어 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook 공모전이, 올해로 10주년을 맞이하며 더레퍼런스 서울에서 한국 관객을 만날 준비를 하고 있다.

《2022 Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards》(이하 2022 포토북 공모전)를 통해 현시대의 사진이 가지고 있는 의미를 되새겨 보고 오늘날 제작되는 포토북의 흐름을 짚어보고자 한다. 2022년 공모전에 출품한 1,000권의 포토북 중, 총 38권이 선정되었고 수상 부문은 ‘첫 포토북First photobook’, ‘올해의 포토북Photobook of the year’, ‘올해의 사진 카탈로그Photography Catalogue of the year’ 세 부문으로 나뉜다.

포토북을 펼쳐볼 때마다 설레는 마음이 드는 건, 포토북 자체가 하나의 작품(piece of art)처럼 느껴져서일 지도 모른다. 인쇄물로서 포토북 그 자체가 가진 개성과 심미적 요소는 오롯이 책으로서의 작품성을 배가하기 때문이다.

오늘날 포토북의 물성은 새롭게 재정의 되고 있다. 한 권의 작품, 오브제의 역할을 수행하는 잘 만들어진 포토북과 오리지널 가구의 만남을 그려본다. 두 오브제 모두 독자적으로 훌륭한 예술성을 가지고 있지만, 그 사이에 사람이 개입되었을 때 비로소 예술의 깊이를 직접 헤아려 볼 수 있어 특별한 경험이 될 것이다.

As the world’s largest photography art fair, the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards marks its 10th anniversary this year and is preparing to meet Korean audiences at The Reference Seoul.



Through the 《2022 Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards》 (hereafter the 2022 PhotoBook Awards), the exhibition seeks to reflect on the significance of photography today and to trace the currents of contemporary photobook production. Out of 1,000 photobooks submitted to the 2022 competition, a total of 38 titles were selected, with awards given in three categories: First Photobook, Photobook of the Year, and Photography Catalogue of the Year.



Perhaps the excitement one feels when opening a photobook comes from the sense that the photobook itself functions as a single piece of art. As a printed object, its inherent character and aesthetic qualities intensify its artistic value as a book.



Today, the materiality of the photobook is being newly redefined. One can imagine a beautifully crafted photobook—an artwork and object in its own right—encountering a piece of original furniture. Both objects possess their own distinct artistic merit, yet it is only when a person intervenes between them that one can truly gauge the depth of the art, offering a uniquely special experience.
